How do I prepare my timber for staining?

Always sand down the timber first it gives a much smoother cleaner finish, especially if it has any scratches or blemishes as the stain with highlight these areas.

What does the grit mean on sanding sheets?

The grit is a rating on how abrasive the sandpaper is by how big the abrasive material is on the sandpaper. The higher the grit number the smoother the finish and the lower grit number the coarser finish.
