Planed Timber (PAR)

Expect the actual size of each length of planed timber to be about 4-5mm less than the nominal size e.g. a 25x150 PAR will actually finish at 21 x 145.

As PAR has already been planed it doesn't require much finishing compared to sawn timber, PAR generally only needs sanding, which is why it's also known as planed timber.

Softwood PAR is extremely versatile and suitable for all types of projects including internal joinery and even furniture construction. A range of sizes are available, from 12 x 25mm up to 32 x 275mm. What are the main uses of PAR?

Planed softwood timber is mostly used indoors for floorboards, window frames, balustrades and furniture. It can be used on outside for fence tops and decking or even structures such as outdoor furniture, gazebos or summerhouses where the timber is visible and may come into contact with bare skin.

What does PAR stand for?

PAR stands for Planed All Round and means that the timber board is planed for a smooth finish on all sides.

Why should I use PAR?

If the timber is going to be on display, seen or handled by others, then you will want the sides to be planed, as rough edges are not aesthetically pleasing and can create health and safety issues with splinters.

What products can I use on PAR?

You can use stains, wax varnish and even paint on PAR, if you do not like the wood finish.
